Highways in the United States

From Truck Simulator Wiki
Jump to navigation Jump to search

There are three systems of major highways in the United States of America: The Interstate Highway System, the United States Numbered Highway System (also known as U.S. Routes or U.S. Highways), and State Highways/Routes/Roads.

Note that the lengths shown in the tables below are not to scale; the game is set in two different scales – a 'regular' scale (1:20) and a 'city' scale (1:3).

Lengths marked by a dagger (†) do not cover the full route and need to be updated.

Interstate Highways

Interstate shield

The Interstate Highway System is a network of controlled-access highways in the United States, which mean they don't have intersections, traffic signals, or access to property. They are written in the format Interstate X (I-X).

Main Interstates

An example of an Interstate Highway in American Truck Simulator

There is a number system for the main Interstates. Interstate Highways going west-east have even numbers and are numbered south to north (e.g. Interstate 10 is in the southern United States and Interstate 90 is in the northern United States). Interstate Highways going south-north have odd numbers and are numbered west to east (e.g. Interstate 5 is in the western US and Interstate 45 is east of that).

The main Interstate Highways featured in American Truck Simulator are:

Auxiliary Interstates

Several auxillary Interstates are also featured in American Truck Simulator, which are numbered with a number in front of the originating Interstate. Odd means that it's a spur and even means that it loops back.

Most of them usually split the main Interstate into two branches running parallel to each other, connecting at least two cities with the same number of the originating Interstate.

US Highways

US Highway shield

The US Highway System is an integrated network of roads and highways numbered within a nationwide grid in the contiguous United States. Unlike Interstate Highways, US Highways are generally smaller roads that contain grade-level intersections, traffic signals, and access to property. However, many have controlled-access sections, either along part of or the entirety of their route. They are written in the format U.S. Route XX (US XX).

Main US Highways

An example of an US Highway in American Truck Simulator

The numbering system for US Highways is the opposite of that for the Interstates. East-west routes have even numbers and are numbered north to south. North-south routes have odd numbers and are numbered east to west.

Special US Routes

Some US Highways have separate routes correlated with their number, which serve to provide an alternate route to the main "parent" route. Each type of special route possesses generally defined characteristics and has a defined relationship with its parent route.

Business Routes

Business Route shield

These are by far the most common special route of the US Highway System. Business routes connect the parent route to the city center, while the parent route goes around. These routes are generally signed using a "Bus" or "Business" plate above the parent route's shield. They are written in the format US XX Business (US XX Bus.).

Bypasses

Bypass shield

Bypasses do the exact opposite of business routes; they bypass a city center when a parent route goes into it. These routes are often labelled using a "By-Pass" plate above the parent route's shield. They are written in the format US XX Bypass or US XX By-Pass and are abbreviated US XX Byp..

Alternate Route shield ("A" Suffix)

Alternate routes are roads that follow a different alignment to the parent route, but still take a generally parallel alignment. These routes are often labelled using an "Alternate" or "Alt." plate above the shield for the parent route, or by displaying an "A" suffix after the parent route's number on the shield. They are written in the format US XX Alternate (US XX Alt.).
