Toll Gates: American Truck Simulator

Toll Gates are facilities found on some roads featured in American Truck Simulator.

Summary

As suggested by the name, these facilities charge truckers for using the roads they are placed on. Roads controlled by toll gates are called toll roads.

Evolution

American Truck Simulator features a few "single" toll gates, most of them situated near San Francisco. Tolls play an important role in states highway funding in many states in the US, these tolls benefit the local economy, support road maintenance and cleanliness of the stretch of the road. They are the only toll gates that allow truckers to pass through while they are still open after the vehicle before has left. In this case the gates act like "electronic" toll gates. There are also some smaller toll gates scattered around the map. They are mostly located in national parks but are restricted to commercial vehicles. There are five toll gates in the base game and counting map expansions (one in Oregon, one in Colorado, ten in Kansas, two in Montana, ten in Oklahoma, and two in Wyoming) for a total of 31 so far.

In the Kansas DLC, tolls will differ a little payment wise from other pre-existing tolls in American Truck Simulator. Rather than a set priced fee, you will now only be charged for the distance you've travelled along the toll road. This means if you only travel a short distance before exiting, you'll be charged a smaller amount versus a driver who travels the entire length of the road.

Trivia

  • If a trucker manages to skip the toll gate via glitching, a red light offence penalty fee would be induced.
  • Toll gates in California charge vehicles according to the number of axles present. In other words, truckers driving vehicles with more axles or hauling doubles would be charged more.
  • National Parks charge a $20 toll in ATS. If a trucker has a trailer attached in these protected areas, they will receive a $1000 fine. The exception to this rule are Mount St. Helens, Grand Canyon, Death Valley, and Crater Lake which have parking lots big enough for a truck at their observatories.
  • No tolls are collected at the toll gate at the interchange between I-44 and US 377/SH-99 in Stroud and at the toll gate at the interchange between I-44 and US 59/US 60/US 69 in Miami for an unknown reason.
