There are currently 50 states that encompass the United States, these are bound together in a union with each other. Each state holds governmental jurisdiction over a defined geographic territory and shares its sovereignty with the United States Federal government. For example, in the trucking industry each state has its own regulations in regards trailers. Some states allow Doubles, some allow Turnpikes and some don't. To view all the state trailer restrictions, see Long Combination Vehicles.

American Truck Simulator will take you on a journey throughout the vast landscapes full of breathtaking and iconic landmarks of North American
When asked if there will be groups of states at some point, SCS Dev Eryk replied that, "...there will be packs of states when we reach states that are too small to be released as single dlc."
Trivia
In the official website for American Truck Simulator, under the closed section Haul through the legendary roads, a navigable map of the states in ATS (accessible and upcoming) can be found (similar to as the image in the article's infobox). Each state has its own link address that can be opened in a new tab or by searching it up via [the website name]/images/map/[the image name]. If one tries to type in the postal abbreviation of any state in the site's following link address (https://americantrucksimulator.com/images/map/overlay_[state's postal abbreviation].png), they will either receive the exact state, a state with the incorrect abbreviation, or a "404 Not Found" page error, as not all images have the correct abbreviation in their name. The following state overlays have the incorrect abbreviation in their image name:
Missouri is labeled as MI instead of MO; MO is currently used by Montana, while the correct abbreviation of MI is Michigan.
Montana is labeled as MO instead of MT; the correct abbreviation of MO is Missouri.
Texas is labeled as TE instead of TX, although no state uses the TE abbreviation.
