Spain is a storied country of stone castles, snowcapped mountains, vast monuments, and sophisticated cities, all of which have made it a favoured travel destination. The country is geographically and culturally diverse.
Due to Spain's decentralized form of government, the responsibility of maintaining and designating motorways is split between the national government and the various autonomous communities of Spain. This has resulted in the Spanish motorway network being split into several systems:
State Network (Spanish: Red Estatal): Motorways which span multiple communities and are managed by the central government.
Autonomous Network (Spanish: Red Autonómica): Motorways managed by the autonomous communities.
Municipal Network (Spanish: Red Municipal): Motorways managed by individual cities.
Roads are also split into three classifications based on capacity and features:
Autopistas: High-capacity motorways which are generally tolled, and have sequential numbering for their exits.
Autovías: High-capacity motorways which are never tolled, and have distance-based numbering for their exits.
Carreterras: Low-capacity roads, only facilitating one lane of traffic in each direction.
National Motorways are high-capacity interurban roads managed by the Spanish central government. Autopistas are marked with an "AP-" prefix, while Autovías are marked with an "A-" prefix. There are 34 National Motorways in Spain featured in Euro Truck Simulator 2:
National Roads (Spanish: Carreteras Nacionales) are low-capacity interurban roads, and are marked with a 'N-' prefix. There are 23 National Roads in Spain featured in Euro Truck Simulator 2:
Autonomous Motorways are high-capacity regional roads managed by the individual autonomous communities of Spain. They are marked with different prefixes indicating which region manages them (eg. 'AG-' for Galicia, 'C-' for Catalonia, etc.). There are seven Autonomous Motorways in Spain featured in Euro Truck Simulator 2:
Autonomous Roads (Spanish: Carreteras Autonómicas) are low-capacity regional roads managed by the individual autonomous communities of Spain. There are 12 Autonomous Roads in Spain featured in Euro Truck Simulator 2:
Municipal Roads urban roads which serve urban areas in Spain, most of which are managed by both the central government and the municipal government. All of them are marked with the initial letters of the city they serve (eg. 'AC-' for A Coruña, 'B-' for Barcelona', 'CO-' for Córdoba, and so on).
