The Job Market is the central hub for all the cargo deliveries in Euro Truck Simulator 2 and American Truck Simulator. Jobs are divided into five different types: Quick Jobs, Freight Market, External Contracts (if the player have linked their account with World of Trucks), Cargo Market (if you have your own trailer) and External Market (if the player have World of Trucks with a player-owned trailer attached). Each has its own advantages and disadvantages.
All jobs that are currently available to the player can be selected as either a Quick Job, through the Freight Market or with World of Trucks. If you find a high-paying job that starts in a far away city, you can drive all the way there and take the job yourself, or you can just select it in Quick Job and you'll be teleported there immediately.
In the Quick Jobs section, the player works as a driver-for-hire. You are presented with a variety of cargo options based on your XP level and the skills you have acquired. When you take a Quick Job, you are immediately teleported into the company's truck and your trailer and cargo is already hooked up and ready to go, just turn the key and drive. All of your expenses along the way are paid by the employer. This includes fuel, tolls and repair fees, but does NOT include ferry or train rides and personal fines such as red light and speeding offences. Henceforth, jobs that involve ferry or train rides will eat into your profits.
The player won't be able to customize the truck while they are driving, because the truck is not theirs.
The Freight Market is the way to select jobs if you want to work with your own truck (The company doesn't provide it). This comes with some benefits and drawbacks.
The main benefit is, of course, more money! Taking a job through the Freight Market yields a higher profit. Although you have to pay for your own fuel, motorway tolls and ferry or train rides, the higher pay greatly outweighs these expenses in most cases. Driving your own truck may also be more comfortable due to your preferred layout, display panels, etc.
However, do consider any additional expenses such as repair fees, as you are using your own truck. You will also need to ensure your truck is capable of carrying the weight of heavier cargoes, especially when going up-slope. Any personal fines will still be borne by you. When you select a job through the Freight Market, instead of being teleported, the pickup location will be marked on your GPS. Once you arrive at the designated company or business, stop in the green marker and you will be able to select your desired job. Once you have done this, your trailer will be marked on the map and in-world. You must reverse to the trailer and couple to it (Default key "T") before you can set off toward your destination. Once you're hooked up, everything is the same as for a quick job.
It is possible to damage the trailer without damaging the cargo, but any cargo damage will count heavily against you in the Freight Market. A cargo damage will reduce your XP gained and greatly reduce your pay.
External Contracts are very similar to the Freight Market. You still need your own truck and the same expenses and rewards apply. However, the jobs are synced to your World of Trucks account. When you are looking for these jobs, you can only see them in the cities near you, not the whole map. A circle around your truck location will indicate that. When you accept the contract, it's immediately given to you, unlike the Freight Market where you have to drive to the company to accept the contract.
In American Truck Simulator, your speed is limited to 65 mph (105 km/h). In Euro Truck Simulator 2, your speed is limited to 90 km/h (56 mph). The deadline for completing external contracts is in real time, not in-game time, so it's important not to accept an external contract when your playtime is limited (for example, when it is about time to go to bed); on the other hand, this means the only penalty for resting in-game is the passage of time.
As players are not meant to use the developer flying camera, any instant teleportation of your truck is not possible in this mode. This means that you have to drive very carefully so as not to get into difficult situations.
Cargo Market was introduced in the 1.32 update and is also similar to the Freight Market. However, you can use your own trailer to deliver the cargo depending of what type of your trailer it is (Refrigerated, Logging, Flatbed, etc), which are shown as an image in place of the company's trailer. Upon selecting a job from a company, you will need to park your trailer at the highlighted position to load the cargo (although the game gives you the option to skip this, provided that you are close enough to the parking position), after which you will drive to your destination following your Route Advisor. The engine must be stopped before loading or unloading cargo. Any damage to your trailer can be fixed at a repair shop at your own expense. Similarly, any cargo damage will reduce your XP and payments of damages of your truck and trailer. However, any damages of your truck and trailer can be fixed, but the cargo damage is PERMANENT, so you have to finish this job without any hits on your truck and trailer.
External Market was introduced in the 1.35 update . It allows truckers to take jobs from World of Trucks with a player-owned trailer attached. When doing an External Market job, the same benefits and restrictions of External Market apply, including:
- Only normal priority jobs are available.
- Only jobs within a certain distance of the trucker's in-game position are displayed. External Market circles are usually larger than External Contract circles, because of the additional restriction of available goods brought by the trucker's current trailer.
- Due time is calculated in real-life time instead of in-game time.
- Automatic speed limiter on trucks (65 mph in ATS and 90 km/h in ETS2).
Convoy was introduced in the 1.41 update. This mode supports up to 8 truckers to deliver cargo together. Environmental aspects like time, weather, AI traffic, random events, etc. can be synchronized between participants.
