  • The A1 goes south from Newcastle, transforming into the A1M as it heads towards Sheffield. Both access roads to Newcastle proper have junctions with the A1, with its northern terminus at the access to the Port of Newcastle.
  • The road north of the Port of Newcastle is numbered as the A696. Further on, the A68 and A720 take over before reaching Edinburgh.
  • The northern access road to Newcastle continues further west after meeting the A1. Its terminus is in Carlisle, and thence the M6.
