Winterland
Winterland is a fictional place featured in the Christmas Winterland event in 2023. It also returns in the Return to Winterland Event 2024.
Summary
Winterland can only be accessed through portals in real word (marked on the map with white spirals):
- In order to enable the portals, the player should first take an External Contracts job (owned truck required) from any town in their vicinity to one of 5 locations in Winterland listed below.
- After taking the job and attaching the trailer, the player will receive a message on their route advisor saying "Set waypoint to the desired portal". The world map will now feature the icons of the portals that are usually located at the gas stations outside the urban areas or large rest stations besides the highways.
- Upon arriving at the whereabouts of the portal, the player will see an animation of falling snowflakes, which marks the exact location of the portal. The driver should head towards the animation, shut down the engine upon receiving a respective short message (similar to the one that the player receives upon entering a rest stop or a gas station), and then press the "Enter" key to activate the portal.
- The player will then access Winterland by teleporting to a random exit portal; upon arrival, the waypoint on the Route advisor will be already set for the chosen destination.
- The player can also travel back from Winterland to real world by using one of the 4 portals. Locations of the portals:
- West of Post Office
- On the road connecting Post Office and Mountain Resort
- On the road connecting Mountain Resort and Chocolate Factory
- On the road connecting Chocolate Factory and Arts Workshop
- All portals are located on the exits from the main roads in Winterland.
There are no speed limits in Winterland and no possibility to get a fine. However, the drivers are advised not to drive fast on the snowy terrain to avoid skidding and damaging the truck, especially while turning or maneuvering.
Cities
There are 5 cities in Winterland:

Roads
The roads in Winterland are not numbered. The main road in Winetrland seems to be the outer triangular beltway, which connects 4 out of the 5 cities in Winterland (apart from the Town Square) and lets the truckers access the portals. Evidently, the roads on the outer side of the beltway serve as the exits for the portals and depots, whilst the 4 roads on the inner side of the beltway run towards the Town Square.
Road safety
The roads in Winterland do not have any road markings, traffic lights, or conventional road signs expect for the custom road signs pointing for the depots. Most roads are single carriageways with two lanes; there are a few one-lane road stretches in the mountainous regions of the map and a couple of narrow steel bridges. Many roads in Winterland, especially the ones inside the cities and mountainous regions, have makeshift railing out of snowdrifts to prevent the truckers from going off-road; some roads outside of the urban areas are instead fenced with the reflective poles that mark the boundaries of the roadways.

Trivia
- Traveling through the portal in either direction counts as resting and resets the fatigue levels. This compromises the absence of rest stops in Winterland.
- There are 5 viewpoints in Winterland, one viewpoint per each city.
- In Winterland, the route advisor always displays abnormally high and often inaccurate estimated travel time for relatively short distances (for example, it shows that a 48-km or 30-mi trip in Winterland is expected to take 2 in-game hours). It is unclear why this occurs, but one of the reasons behind this phenomenon may be because the truckers are expected to drive slower on the snowy terrain.
- No AI traffic is ever seen on the roads in Winterland (parked cars don't count) and thus no random events ever occur.
- The foundation year of SCS Software, 1997, appears in multiple places as an easter egg:
- as the foundation year of Rudolph's Crafts,
- as the number of the locomotive going through Winterland.
- In both ETS2 and ATS, Winterland is in the MST (UTC-7) time zone, despite geographically belonging to UTC±0 based on the Sun.
- There are no rest stops or gas stations in Winterland. Additionally, there are no truck dealers anywhere in this area, including service shops.
